Mom’s Review: Best Feeding Spoons For Baby

As our babies reach their milestones, we can’t help but take photos or videos of them and show it to our friends via social media or offline. But have you stopped and thought if we have the right tools as our little ones develop?

In feeding for example, we cannot use just any adult spoon to feed our babies. No matter how small they are or how much we have sterilized them, adult spoons are for adults.

How To Pick The Best Baby Spoons

How to pick best baby spoon

What then makes a spoon fit for our babies? Here is the list of factors I came up with to help you decide which are the best baby spoons.

1. Safety Features

It goes without saying that we should only use safe objects for our babies, especially when it comes to feeding. The best baby spoons should be BPA, phthalate, PVC, lead, and melamine free.

If you are wondering what these chemicals are, here are the simple explanations so you can visualize what effects they may have on your tiny tots.

BPA. This stands for Besphinol A, a chemical used to make polycarbonate plastics and resins. This chemical affects our babies’ brain, behavior, and prostate glands. Although FDA approves a certain amount of BPA in some foods, it is still best to avoid it altogether.

Phthalate. This is a chemical also used in plastics to make them flexible. High exposure to this chemical may affect the reproductive system and overall development.

PVC. Polyvinyl chloride is a type of plastic that’s known to be the most toxic because of the last two letters, VC, is a human carcinogen. Meaning it may cause cancer.

Lead. This chemical is beneficial in several ways yet toxic to humans and animals when ingested. High level of exposure to this chemical causes brain and nervous system damage.

Melamine. This last chemical can also be found in plastics as well as adhesives and industrial coatings. When heated, melamine may be excreted to our little one’s food, which may result in kidney problems, especially in high concentrations.

2. Materials

Another factor we have to consider is what makes up the baby spoon in general? Although there is no definite answer regarding which material is the best, it is but proper for us to consider at what stage our babies will be using the spoon.

If our babies are teething, for example, it is a good idea to avoid metal spoons. Teething babies have the tendency to bite everything that gets in their mouth. And metals are not good teethers, you know.

3. Shape

Unlike adults that can adjust to any utensil easily, growing babies are the opposite. Hence, it is only ideal to choose shapes that complement our LO’s current eating skill.

For first time eaters, they cannot get food easily off the regular spoons so a flat type is more suitable. As they learn to get food off the spoons on their own, the regularly shaped ones may be introduced.

4. Design

Let’s admit it, our babies are easily attracted and distracted by different objects. Having a spoon that helps them focus on eating is something we, parents, should also consider. Trust me, it will cut our attention grabber gimmicks in half.

1/ Dr. Brown’s Long Spatula Spoon

Via Amazon.com

Safety: BPA-free

Material: soft plastic

Shape: flat and spatula-shaped tip with tiny grooves on each side.

Design: comes in attracting colors and long handle

Why I like it: I am recommending this because the unique shape of the spoon makes it less messy to feed our baby. First, it is because our babies can get all the food we place on the spoon, as their tongue will not need much adjusting. Second, the flat head makes it easier to wipe the mess off our baby’s face. Yes, better than the round ones. Also, I like that it has a long handle, which makes it easier for me to reach into jars deeper. Plus, the soft plastic feels very comfortable in my hands unlike the hard and metal handles.

Best for: babies starting with solid food

2/ Boon’s Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon

Via Amazon.com

Safety: BPA- and PVC-free

Material: silicone

Shape: regular round tip

Design: comes in various colors with a 3 oz. food dispenser as the handle

Why I like it: I travel a lot with my baby, and sometimes it is a bit of a hassle to carry several items at a time, especially when I’m in a hurry. Having this dispensing spoon makes life easier for me because I have a food storage and spoon in one. It saves space!

Best for: babies who travel with parents

3/ Munchkin White Hot Safety Spoons

Via Amazon.com

Safety: BPA- and phthalate-free

Material: soft plastic

Shape: semi-flat, round tip

Design: comes in 4 colors with long handles

Why I like it: Its unique feature of turning white when the food is too hot for the baby is what I like most about this spoon. This has saved my baby from the number of times I forget to let the food cool completely. Also, the soft tip is OK for babies who are teething, and the long handle is good for reaching deeper into containers.

Best for: babies of any age, as long as they’re at least three months

4/ Beaba 360 Spoon

Via Amazon.com

Safety: BPA-, phthalate-, and lead-free

Material: Polypropylene/Polyethylene

Shape: regular round tip

Design: has a unique handle and different colors to choose from

Why I like it: Teaching our babies how to eat by themselves can be frustrating for them because they don’t know how to hold the spoon properly. The result? Food spills and ruined mood all over. With the 360 spoon, however, also known as the self-leveling spoon, it stays horizontal no matter how our toddlers hold it. The uniquely designed handle rotates so that the tip stays how it should be. Also, if your babies are ready to transition to the regular spoons, you may lock the handle to secure it in place.

Best for: babies learning to self-feed

5/ oogaa Baby Mealtime Train Spoon

Via Amazon.com

Safety: BPA- and PVC-free

Material: silicone

Shape: round tip

Design: has two colors with fun airplane or train handles

Why I like it: There comes a time in our LO’s lives when they just don’t like to eat for some reason. And, of course, we as parents don’t want that. Our solution? Make mealtime fun time. But with all the distractions around, it is sure a feat. But with these spoons, I was able to let my little girl focus more on eating than playing. The striking colors and the fun design are a big help. Plus, they are made of silicone so they’re suitable for teething babies.

Best for: picky, easily distracted eaters
